Stop Traffic Violence 〰️ End Rush Hour Reverse Lanes 〰️

It’s long past time to end the outdated & dangerous rush hour reverse lanes on the 7’s.

Join us today by signing & sharing our petition!

THE ISSUE: Since their inception in 1979 (7th Ave) and 1981 (7th St.) these rush hour reverse lanes have hurt connectivity among our neighborhoods and businesses and have led to dangerous cut-through traffic in our neighborhoods. The use of these lanes has contributed to the demise of many businesses along “the 7’s,” leaves thousands of drivers stressed and confused every day, and has not done an effective job of moving traffic as intended. It is not surprising that no other City in Arizona has decided to adopt the reversible lane concept and this unorthodox traffic condition is not used on any other street in our City.

THE HOPE: Killing the reverse rush hour lanes will help businesses along 7th Street and 7th Ave (many of which are very hard, if not impossible to access during key portions of the day) will make it a more enjoyable experience to drive, walk, bike and use public transportation on the 7’s, and will make our communities safer. We are calling on Mayor Kate Gallego, all City Council Members, Phoenix City Manager and the City of Phoenix Streets Department Director to immediately end the rush hour reverse lanes and keep the middle lane as a turn lane only throughout all times of the day. We also believe the most recent City of Phoenix traffic study that used 2018 data is outdated and irrelevant in this post-covid world where many people work from home or outside of “typical” rush hour times, and given the many attempts to get rid of these dangerous reverse lanes over the past 20 years, it’s time for the City to listen and ACT.

THE HELP: We need all community members, neighbors and business owners along the 7’s, those who’ve been involved in accidents or near-misses during rush hour on the 7’s and everyone in Phoenix who has experienced the chaos that these outdated lanes have created to get involved to put an end to these rush hour reverse lanes once and for all! Learn how you can get involved HERE.

The Rush Hour Reversible Lanes Have Been Hated For Many Years

It’s important to remember that these lanes were implemented long before our current highway system was in place. In fact, they were created at a time when we didn’t even have Council Districts to properly represent all neighborhoods! At the time they were put in place, it was to move people from more affluent north Phoenix communities in and out of downtown Phoenix as quickly as possible. Our neighborhoods along the 7’s have grown up, as has our downtown, and the local businesses that serve us have become destinations in their own right. Patrons and employees of these businesses shouldn’t have to navigate dangerous driving conditions and unnecessary turns to work, eat, shop or play. Learn more about our current initiative.

Our Streets Should Be Safe for EVERYONE.

7th Avenue and Phoenix streets were heavily featured in a documentary film titled The Street Project that was released in 2022. Phoenix, Arizona is notorious for being a car-centric city with some of the highest red light runner crashes, pedestrian and cyclist injuries and fatalities and high speed corridors in the country. Our streets are DANGEROUS BY DESIGN. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Cities around the country and world have been listening to residents who demand safer streets and are redesigning streets to be safer for everyone — pedestrians, cyclists, seniors, those with mobility issues, public transit riders AND drivers. Please watch the documentary to learn about real solutions for our Phoenix streets — including 7th Street and 7th Avenue. You can learn how to host your own community screening/discussion of the documentary HERE.
